Valparai, Siruvani Record Steady Monsoon Rain; Coimbatore City Sees Sparse Showers

Valparai topped Coimbatore district with a cumulative 107 mm of rainfall, while 24 mm of rain in the Siruvani catchment is expected to aid inflows into the city’s key drinking water reservoir.

Here’s a more polished, newspaper-style rewrite with better flow, less repetition, and stronger vocabulary:

Coimbatore: The southwest monsoon continued to favour the western parts of Coimbatore district, with Valparai once again emerging as the region receiving the highest rainfall, while Siruvani, the city’s key drinking water catchment, registered another day of healthy showers.

The District Disaster Management’s rainfall report for the 24-hour period ending at 7.30 a.m. on July 8 showed that the district recorded 154.60 mm of cumulative rainfall, with an average of 6.72 mm, placing the overall precipitation in the light rainfall category.

The Valparai region accounted for the bulk of the district’s rainfall, recording a combined 107 mm across its six monitoring stations. Chinnakallar topped the district with 27 mm, followed by Sholayar and Siruvani Adivaram with 24 mm each. Valparai PAP received 21 mm, Valparai Taluk recorded 19 mm, while Cinchona measured 16 mm.

Since the onset of the southwest monsoon, Valparai has remained Coimbatore district’s wettest belt, receiving regular spells of rain, unlike the plains where precipitation has largely been sporadic and localised.

Another encouraging trend has been the sustained rainfall in the Siruvani catchment over the past week. The 24 mm recorded at Siruvani Adivaram is expected to strengthen inflows into the Siruvani reservoir, one of the primary sources of drinking water for Coimbatore city.

In contrast, most parts of the city and adjoining areas experienced little or no rainfall during the reporting period. TNAU recorded only 0.40 mm, while the PWD Office at Sulur received 2.80 mm. Madukkarai registered 7 mm, and Kinathukadavu received 13.40 mm. Monitoring stations at Peelamedu Airport, P.N. Palayam, Mettupalayam, Pollachi, Anaimalai and several other locations reported no rainfall.

Although rainfall has remained inconsistent across Coimbatore city and its eastern suburbs, the continued monsoon activity over Valparai and the Siruvani catchment is expected to benefit the district’s water resources, particularly as the reservoir receives steady inflows during the current monsoon season.
