Vinoth Kumar, a police constable attached to the Thudiyalur Police Station has been suspended after being arrested on charges of allegedly sexually harassing a 23-year-old assistant professor during a night patrol inquiry in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: A police constable attached to the Thudiyalur Police Station has been placed under suspension after being arrested for allegedly sexually harassing a 23-year-old assistant professor during a night patrol inquiry in Coimbatore.
According to the police, the incident occurred on July 15 when Constable Vinoth Kumar and another police personnel were on patrol near the Housing Board Phase-II area in Vellakinar. They noticed the woman, an assistant professor at a private college, and her 21-year-old student conversing in the area and intercepted them for questioning.
Police said Vinoth Kumar allegedly took the woman to a secluded place on the pretext of conducting further inquiry and sexually harassed her. The woman later informed her student about the incident, following which the two approached senior police officials and lodged a complaint.
Based on the complaint, the Thudiyalur Police registered a case against Vinoth Kumar under four sections of law, including provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act. He was arrested and later remanded to judicial custody by a court before being lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
Following the registration of the case, senior police officers conducted a departmental inquiry into the incident and submitted a report to Coimbatore City Police Commissioner K. Kannan.
Based on the findings of the preliminary inquiry, the Commissioner placed Constable Vinoth Kumar under suspension pending further investigation.
Further investigation into the case is under way.
