Road Safety First: Coimbatore SP Issues Fresh Directives to Private and Omni Bus Operators

Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar Reddy held a consultation with private and omni bus operators, directing them to strengthen road safety measures, install CCTV cameras and comply with traffic regulations, while warning of joint enforcement drives after a 15 day compliance period.

Coimbatore:With a focus on enhancing road safety and improving compliance with traffic regulations, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Pavan Kumar Reddy on Thursday held a consultation meeting with private and omni bus operators, urging them to adopt stricter safety measures and prevent the misuse of public transport for illegal activities, including narcotics trafficking.

The meeting, held at the District Police Office, was attended by more than 100 participants, including Deputy Superintendents of Police, Inspectors, Regional Transport Officers, private bus owners, office bearers of private and omni bus associations, and other stakeholders.

Addressing the gathering, Pavan Kumar Reddy said reducing road accidents involving private buses is a shared responsibility and urged operators to strictly adhere to traffic regulations. He emphasised the need to ensure the safety of all passengers, particularly women, children, senior citizens and persons with disabilities while boarding and alighting from buses. Drivers and conductors were also instructed to maintain courteous behaviour and provide safe, passenger friendly services.

Officials from the Regional Transport Department cautioned operators against using high decibel pressure horns, unauthorised decorative lighting and excessively bright headlights, reiterating the legal provisions governing such modifications.

The Superintendent of Police also urged operators to remain vigilant against the transportation of narcotic substances through buses and to immediately alert the police if they notice any suspicious passengers, baggage or activities.

Bus owners were directed to ensure that speed governors are functional, vehicles are maintained in roadworthy condition and drivers undergo periodic training. They were also advised to install CCTV cameras in all buses as part of the district’s anti narcotics initiative and avoid unauthorised vehicle modifications.

Operators were further instructed to prevent students and other passengers from travelling on footboards or in other unsafe conditions to minimise the risk of accidents.

A 15 day compliance period has been given for implementing the directions issued during the meeting. Following this, the Police and Regional Transport Department will jointly conduct district wide enforcement drives, with strict legal action, including the seizure of vehicles wherever necessary, against those violating traffic and transport regulations.
