Coimbatore: Residents from areas surrounding the ACC Cement factory in Madukkarai, located on Palakkad Road in Coimbatore district, staged a protest today on the Palakkad main road against the facility that has been operational for several years. Protesters alleged that cement particles released from the factory have severely polluted the air, causing widespread respiratory problems among local residents.
The ACC Cement factory, owned by the prominent cement manufacturing company, has been operating in the Madukkarai area for a long time. Recently, the Adani Group acquired this company. Local residents have been consistently raising complaints that cement particles discharged from the factory are causing significant air pollution in the area, leading to various respiratory disorders.
Residents expressed their distress stating that excessive dust is released from early morning hours, contaminating drinking water and homes, creating serious hygiene issues. They reported suffering from various types of respiratory diseases due to the pollution. Despite struggling for years without resolution, they have once again resorted to staging protests.
Protesters accused authorities of inaction despite raising the issue with factory management, district administration, and the Pollution Control Board. They alleged that the Pollution Control Board conducts only nominal inspections and that factory management is informed beforehand whenever officials plan to conduct tests, allowing them to prepare in advance.
