A Roller Coaster experience at the Kalingarayar Street

The street behind the Gandhipuram Central bus stand is the 'Kalingarayar street'. Since a couple of years, the residents and commuters have been forced to take a roller coaster ride on those bumpy roads of the street.

It all started in 2005, the TNEB department scheduled the underground electric cable laying works at the Kalingarayar street. The entire stretch of the road and annexing roads were dug to embed electric cables.

Nearly after six months, the TNEB closed the pits with mud and stones in a disorderly way. People were awaiting for new roads to be laid but were shocked to learn that the underground cables that were embedded had some functionality issues and that the whole stretch had to be re-digged for sorting out the issue. This put a full stop for the new road laying works.

The incomplete work has been causing severe traffic snarl-ups which gets worse during evening hours lasting till night. On rainy days, slippages due to the slushes have become a common phenomenon at the Kalingarayar Street.

For nearly two years, there is an all time chaos and rush experienced by motorist through those bumpy and narrow roads leading to the Central bus stand. Residents report that 'fall by motorist due to bumps on the road happen on a daily basis on the street'.

Adding to the issue, there are two tasmac's within close perimeters on the Kalingarayar Street. The boozehounds wander all over the road creating ruckus for the motorists. They are found laying on the sides of the road, sometimes on the road too, which further crunches down the road accessibility for the commuters. The pedestrians find it very challenging to walk during busy hours, as there is barely any space left for them to walk.

This Street connects the cross cut to the 100 feet road main bus stand and hence two-wheelers, four-wheelers, Cabs, Autos and pedestrians opt the road incessantly.

The residents and shopkeepers of Kalingarayar street strongly insist that the authorities of Corporation and the TNEB should take up the issue of earnestly and devise plans to resolve the issue on priority.
