The on-going Coimbatore Airport Expansion project has been witnessing extensive delays due to the protests and petitions filed by the residents of Irugur, Neelambur, Chinniampalayam, Singanallur, Kalapatti for handing over their lands, a total of 628 acres.
Chinniampalayam, a residential area with nearly 450 families is one of the target areas for the expansion project. In 2013, the district authorities assured the locals that the project would target only unused empty lands and no residential lands would be acquired from the public.
Residents allege that the committee formed in 2016 has been silently targeting residential areas for land acquisition. Several petitions have been filed to top officials regarding the issue, they stated.
Today, team of officials led by Special Thasildhar Shankutala of airport expansion project inspected and carried out land measurements at the SSD Mill area in Chinniampalayam towards land acqusitions.
The incident irked the residents, who got into a scuffle with the Thasildhar and staged an unexpected protest.
Later, Sulur Thasildhar arrived at the scene and pacified the residents and reassured them on the promised acquisition procedures. The incident created fidgety among chinniampalaym residents.
