The 650 acres of sprawling campus of the Vellalore dumpyard has been causing persistent issues to the residents around the area. The frequent fire accidents at the dumpyard had infuriated the residents of Konavaikampalayam, Mahalingapuram and Vellalore as they have been undergoing innumerable health hazards.
Today, members of the DMK party staged a protest at the Vellalore dumpyard insisting the Corporation officials to shift the yard from the residential area. Continuous exposure to the smoke, unhygienic atmosphere, mosquitos and flies have been persistently affecting the livelihood of the people, they alleged. They cited on the various protests by the residents to shift the dumpyard from the residential area to remote suburbs.
The Coimbatore Corporation has been composting organic waste at this facility. Close to 900 tonnes of wastes collected from the wards, markets and restaurants have been segregated at this dumpyard. The residents grieved that miscreants setting fire at the dumpyard has become a regular incident.
More than 100 protestors were arrested by the police.
