Coimbatore Malayalam Samaj says 'NO' to dam at Attapadi, stands strong with TN

The Coimbatore Malayalam Samaj has responded to the on-going Siruvani dam issue. At a press meet today, they stated that 'All 42 Kerala Samajs' in Tamil Nadu have decided to hold talks with the Kerala Government to stop the construction of the dam at Attapadi and settle the issue amicably'.

The Siruvani dam issue has been condemned widely by all political outfits, environmentalist, social activists, student associations and many other entities and now the Malayali people from Kerala settled in Tamil Nadu have also joined together to manifest their opposition.

'The construction of the dam would adversely affect the livelihood of the farmers, as it is the prime source of irrigation for the people of Coimbatore, Erode and Tiruppur. Hence, the Samaj opposes the Kerala Government's intent to build dam across the Siruvani at Attapadi' they reported.

The members have also decided to meet the Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss on the issue, prior to which they would be meeting the TN Chief Minister and the officials from the revenue department. They affirmed that 'In the past we have voiced our opinions on the Mullai Periyar and Siruvani issues, which turned out to be positive. So we are definite that we could aid in resolving the current issue, as well'
