Sandalwood smugglers on a prowl in the city

The city has recorded its 3rd case of sandalwood smuggling this month. Following the incidents at Race Course and Saramedu Area, Ukkadam, a similar incident has been reported at BN Nagar, Kuniamuthur.

Dhandapani a resident from BN Nagar, had been maintaining a 18-year-old sandalwood tree at his premise. Yesterday night, some unidentified strangers have axed the tree and smuggled it.

Dhandapani has registered a case at the Kuniamuthur Police station. The police have doubled up the security, post the riots at many places and Kuniamuthur is also one such place. Despite security, the smuggling incident has shocked the people. The offenders of the previous cases are yet to be nabbed. Sandalwood trees have been given numbered and due protection is provided by the forest officials but if grown at private places, the responsibility vests with the owners.
