Madras High Court cancels upcoming local body elections

The Madras High Court has passed an order to cancel the upcoming local body elections to be held on 17th and 19th October, 2016. Also, directing the TN Election Commission to issue a fresh election notification and to complete the poll process by December, 2016.

A Public interest litigation (PIL) petition was filed by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) represented by its Organisation Secretary R.S. Bharathi alleging on reservations for Scheduled tribes (ST) and citing 'NIL' allotment of seats for ST people in the upcoming local body elections. Out of the 200 wards in Chennai, no seats have been allotted to the people from ST community citing this issue, RS Bharathi filed the PIL at the Madras High Court.

Today Magistrate Kirubakaran of Madras HC took up the PIL and directed the TN Election commission to rework on the election announcements and to re-schedule the election dates, before December 31st, 2016. The Court has issued orders to the Election Commission to strictly ban candidates with offensive records to contest in the elections and that the election commission has to handle the issue diligently. 

However, it is anticipated that the Tamil Nadu Election Commission would file a case on the issue, shortly.
