Migrant workers questioned in connection with storage of one-tonne PDS rice

Following an increase in the incidents of sale of Public Distribution System (PDS) rice in the grey market, the government officials have stepped up vigil. PDS rice is meant for distribution through PDS system per se. However, officials continue to receive tip-offs on this rice being illegally sold through other channels. Officials from the distribution department conducted inspections in various parts of Coimbatore. Several tons of PDS rice were confiscated.

While conducting an inspection at the Coimbatore Junction, about 1.5-tons of rice meant to be distributed through PDS was confiscated. Acting on a tip-off the team of officers visited a home that is located in Papanaickenpalayam in the city. Officials conducted an inspection in this home and confiscated PDS rice weighing one-ton from this home too. This home is occupied by migrant workers. The residents of this home are currently being questioned to determine the source of the rice.
