Listeners of Radio City 91.1 FM were in for a surprise this morning. One of the RJs of this station was on the Pollachi road. An announcement was made on this radio station trees that dot this stretch will be uprooted and planted in a new location at the Rathinam Techzone Campus that is located on the Pollachi Main Road.

This road is home to about 1,700 trees. Due to development work on this stretch it was stated that the trees on this entire road need to be uprooted. The founders of the Rathinam Group of Institutions were kind enough to give these trees space for six trees and an opportunity to be grown in their campus. This morning the process to uproot six trees was initiated and post lunch they will be replanted in this campus.
“Of the trees there is one 25-year old and a 30-year old neem tree and one of the trees age is 45-years. The trees along with their roots will be uprooted and planted. We are positive that the trees will grow normally.” Syed K, environmentalist of OSAI NGO said.

Following the footsteps of the Rathinam Group of Institutions are several educational institutions. S. Rajendar of Pasumai Desam a city-based NGO shares “It is heart-warming that many other city-based educational institutions have also come ahead to offer the trees space in their premises. They have also offered to take care of cost for uprooting, transporting and replanting the trees.” Rajendar said.

City-based environment activists and NGOs like Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore (RAAC), Siruthuli, Pasumai Desam, OSAI among others are doing all that they can to save the thousand odd trees from being felled.
