Dr. Ravindra Bharathi, Plastic Surgeon, Ganga Medical Centre and Hospitals, Coimbatore advices us to have a safe and a responsible diwali. A majority of people burst fire crackers as a part of celebrating this festival of lights. This doctor advices us to be cautious while bursting and disposing fire crackers. Children he says must burst fire crackers only under the strict supervision of adults.
“Fire crackers are made up of chemicals and chemical powders. While we are bursting them, there are chances of these chemicals coming into contact with our body. Thus we must be extra cautious while bursting fire crackers.” Dr. Bharathi says. He advices us to not to wear loose clothes while lighting crackers.
While involved in the activity of bursting fire crackers we must maintain a distance from them. Never get too close to the fire crackers. Additionally some fire crackers will refuse to light on the first instance. Do not attempt to light them again. There are chances of the fire cracker exploding and causing an accident.” Dr. Bharathi says. Never try to light firecrackers holding them in your hand. We recommend bursting them holding them in your hand.
“Fire crackers must be disposed safely too. While disposing them spare a thought for those who walk around barefoot. Instead dispose all fire crackers in a safely so that they do not cause harm to anyone who comes in contact with them.” Dr. Bharathi says. In case an individual comes into contact with fire crackers that results in an accident, do not panic advices this doctor. “It is a myth that fire cracker wounds should not be treated or cleaned with water. However it is best if the victim is given first aid by cleaning the wound with water before taking medical help.” Dr. Bharathi says. A majority of people assume that the wounds when they come in contact with water can do harm, this is not the case.
Always have a bucket of water handy while bursting fire crackers. Wishing everyone a safe diwali, Dr. Bharathi advices us to be responsible too this festive season.
