Yesterday midnight a dozen of elephants rampaged a 12 acre farmland at Thirumalaiyampalayam, Ettimadai. The herd of 12 entered the farm of Nagaraj at around 1 am in the night and rampaged the crops and the farm house.

Nagaraj the farm owner has reported that close to 2 lakh worth of crops have been destroyed by the herd. And that his farm house was also not spared in the rampage. Nagaraj says that he escaped through the back doors of the farm house and sensing his escape the herd chased him for a short distance and sped away.

The forest offcials were intimated immediately but however they arrived very late, he said. The compound walls of the farm, farm house building, banana and tomato plants that were ready for harvest all leading to an estimated loss of 2 lakhs should be duly compensated by the government, pleas Nagaraj.

The delayed monsoon rains has caused a serious dearth of water and food scarcity in the forests hence the wild animals rampaging the villages in search of food has become a very common phenomenon these days. The herd of 12 elephants roaming around the area has panicked the farmers as the crops are all ready will be shortly due for harvest.
