Green tribunal adjourns Vellalore dumpyard case to 23rd November

In the recent days, the Vellalore dumpyard has been in the limelight for all wrong reasons. Of the 600-acres of land area in Vellore, about 150-acres has been declared as dump yard. Residents of this region have time and again complained to officials that the waste dumping has resulted in contamination of the ground water around the perimeter. The residents also claim that the garbage dumped in Vellore has resulted in causing many health problems too as it's become the breeding ground for disease-spreading flies and mosquitoes. The foul smell emanating from the garbage has been posing a huge inconvenience to the residents and pedestrians. The residents and environmentalists have been pressing the concerned departments and officials through protests and petitions to address the issue on priority.

In this regard, MDMK Party youth secretary Easwaran filed a petition at the South Zone Green Tribunal. The tribunal has called upon Special Officer, Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) and Corporation Commissioner Dr. Vijay Karthikeyan to appear before the tribunal of law to explain on the allegations put forth. However, the case has been adjourned for next hearing on 23rd November.

In due course, a counsel on behalf of the CCMC will soon produce the necessary documents at the green tribunal, sources say.
