Families of the deceased farmers must be compensated

Former Union Minister of Shipping of the Government of India G. K. Vasan was in Tamil Nadu. During this recent visit, he made a pit stop in several districts in this state. He was in Coimbatore and before he left for the capital Delhi, he interacted with journalists. During this interaction, he vented out his thoughts on various aspects.

“The central government has issued orders to form the Cauvery water management board. Nothing has been done in this regard. Moreover, Karnataka state too has not released water to Tamil Nadu as per the order of the court. There seems to be no solution to this matter. Owing to the non-availability of water, three farmers have committed suicide in our state. The Government should provide the families of the deceased 10-lakhs compensation each.” Vasan said.

He went on to add that the farmers who are directly affected by the rains must be compensated too. “In my opinion the affected farmers must be given Rs. 50,000/- per acre of agricultural land and similarly farmers must be given compensation for the dry land that they own.” Vasan said.

Moving the focus from the Cauvery issue to the Siruvani issue, Vasan said that there must be a permanent solution to the Siruvani issue too. Commenting on the recent dumping of medical waste from neighbouring Kerala, Vasan said “Vigil must be stepped up at the checkpoints across the state border.  Additionally, the police must work hand-in-hand with the local bodies to put an end to such activity.

He also shared that the issue of jallikattu must be voiced in the parliament. Questioning the delay of the Government of Tamil Nadu to form the Assembly Standing Committee, Vasan shared the government could be delaying the formation of the Assembly Standing Committee because of threat from the opposition Government.
