CCMC meets Hotel Owners Association to discuss on alternatives for plastic bags

Today, Special officer of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), Dr. K. Vijaya Karthikeyan chaired a meeting with hotel owners from Coimbatore about implementation of eco-friendly bags made of cloth or alternate materials instead of plastic bags in their premise.

Addressing those who attended this meeting Dr. K. Vijaya Karthikeyan emphasised on the devastating effects of plastic bags on the environment. Polythene bags due to it's non-biodegradable nature has lead to degradation of natural resources to a great extent around the city, he revealed.  Hence, he requested the hotel owners to use bags made of cloth and eco-friendly alternate materials when giving food parcels to customers. Customers can be insisted to bring their own vessels from home for getting parcels, under unavoidable circumstances, cloth bags could be used for parcels, he suggested. He also apprised the hotel owners to refrain from using poly-propylene non-woven bags, as it is made of 95 percent plastic and still non- biodegradable.
