Close to 70 tonnes of potatoes have piled up at the Metuppalayam (MTP) Co-operative Society, as officials refuse to accept demonetized currency notes from buyers.

The farmers from Ooty trade their potatoes at the MTP Co-operative Society on a daily basis. The potatoes will be auctioned to the buyers directly by the Officials, who in turn will hand over the auctioned amount to the farmers directly.
Since the announcement of demonetisation of 500's and 1000's the wholesale buyers have not turned for the auction, thereby tons of potatoes have been stocked at the Co-operative Society.

Speaking about this a trader from Ooty shared that 'Close to 70 tons of potato has been piled up at the store. The officials at the co-operative store have announced that they will not accept the demonetized currencies from yesterday on wards.
As a result of this, wholesalers have not come forward to buy the goods and the sales has considerably declined. If the situation continues, the potatoes will start to perish leading to a huge loss for the farmers. Hence, the government should take necessary steps to protect the interests of the farmers'.
