World Premature Baby Day observed at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital



Globally, 'World Prematurity Day' is observed on 17th November each year. The day is observed to create awareness about the issues associated with preterm birth and to motivate the parents of such premature babies.

In this regard, a special programme was organised at Sri Ramakrishna Hospital today. Parents from Erode, Salem and Madurai and other parts of Tamil Nadu who had delivered and undergoing consultation for their premature babies at the hospital participated in this event.

Dr. Sukumaran presided over the function and delivered the special address. The Infant Care Centre which was started 25 years ago at this hospital is now having facilities to take care of more 40 children. In his speech he highlighted about the facilities at the centre like high pressure artificial respirators, CPAP, mobile incubator, two special doctors and nurses who are trained in infant cases are available.

Head of the Department of Neonatal Care Dr. Siddartha Buddhavarapu said, “Children who are born prematurely at the age of 24-25 weeks can also be saved with the new facilities. The children can also be prevented from allergy to brain. Such babies should be given special care for few years even after they are discharged from the hospital.”



This programme was organised to create awareness about prematurely born babies among people and doctors. Parents of a baby who was born weighing only 1000gms and who is now studying medicine and parents of twin babies who were born in the 24th week and leading a healthy life today shared their experiences at this programme today.
