SiTarc of Coimbatore today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central Government’s Department of heavy industry for setting up of a Centre of Excellence for manufacture of smart pumps with an aim of making India a hub of pump manufacturing especially the submersible pumps.
The MoU was signed by K.V. Karthick on behalf of SiTarc and Vishvajit Sahay on the behalf of Government of India. Padma Ganesh, Deputy Secretary, Department of Commerce, Reetu Pande, Director DHI, and Sanjay Pande , Senior Development Officer of DHI were also present during the occasion.

The ‘Centre of Excellence’ is an initiative of Department of Commerce funded by Department of Heavy Industries. The aim of the proposed centre is to develop a pump that will help in increasing India’s share of global submersible pump market from present 1% to 6%. A press release stated that this is the first of its kind institution under the government industry alliance model with the GOI funding.
The research institutes will carry out research activities and the industry will manufacture the products based on the research. The research institutes which will be part of this MoU will be IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, CMERI Durgapur and PSG tech Coimbatore. SIEMA will represent in the industry and SiTarc will be the development centre.
Estimated cost of the project will be Rs.8.41 crores out of which the contribution of government of India will be 6.76 crores. The technology developed at the centre will be patented only for the use of Indian manufacturers and industries. About 400 manufacturers from India will be benefited from the research that will be carried out in this institute which also will help the Indian submersible industry to produce world class products.
The smart pump sets will be energy saving and efficient the return on investments on purchasing the pumps using the technology is stated to be three years. Industries will be benefited from the highly efficient pumps that are said to have a relatively low operating cost.
Sates will be benefited from the reduced cost of subsidy it is providing in the form of electricity to the farmers. The centre will have an advanced training facility to train students SIEMA President K.K. Rajan, SiTarc president Jagadeeshan, CODISSIA President Sundaram and office bearers were present during the occasion.
Representatives of industries of Coimbatore and technical educational institutions also attended this event.
