GCT College observes international day for differently abled persons

The International Day for differently Abled Persons was observed at Government College of Technology (GCT) Coimbatore today. The event was organised by the District Differently Abled Welfare department. Coimbatore District Collector T.N. Hariharan presided over the function.



S.P.Velumani, Minister for Rural Development, Municipal Administration and Special Schemes when speaking in the function said, “Under the leadership of Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha, many welfare schemes have been implemented, such that all the sections of the society and has made Tamil Nadu has made several progress because of these welfare schemes.”

“Chief Minister is implementing lot of schemes for the differently-abled persons too. The differently-abled in our state have been provided employment under the MGRES scheme. They are paid a day’s salary for four hours of work. A committee with the Chief Secretary as the head has been formed to ensure that 3% reservation in employment for the differently-abled is implemented.”



“The age pension for eligibility for pensions has been reduced from 45 to 18. Marriage assistance has been extended to all the applicants. Two centres for identifying individuals with hearing problems at an early stage in Coimbatore and Trichy for a cost of Rs.30 lakhs have been set up. Assistance has been provided to 3,849 mentally underdeveloped persons to the tune of 6 cores, 92 lakhs and 82 thousand and 12 lakhs and 78 thousand rupees has also been provided to 71 persons affected by muscular dystrophy.”

About 64 individuals who are affected by leprosy, have been provided an assistance of 11 lakhs and 52 thousand. Rs. 50000 has been given to the state toppers in the public exams and also Rs.25000 has been provided to deaf and dumb children. National Identity cards for differently-abled has been provided to 42860 differently-abled persons and welfare board cards are provided to 13250 differently-abled persons.

In order to make the differently-abled independent, motorised tricycles have been provided to 197 differently-abled persons. Benefits worth 45 crores have been distributed to the differently-abled persons at a cost of Rs.45 crores. This minister also requested the differently-abled persons to get the assistance that are provided by the government that can help in improving the quality of their life. He distributed hearing aids, wheel chairs, artificial limbs, walking sticks to 21 differently-abled persons costing rupees 1.93 lakhs.

District Welfare Officer for differently-abled welcomed the gathering. Sudhakar an expert in treating differently delivered the thanking address. Coimbatore MP A.P. Nagarajan, MLAs P.R.G. Arunkumar, V.C.Arukutti, Amman. K. Arjunan, Ettimadai Shanmugam, Kasturivasu, government officials and students from Coimbatore district participated in the programme.
