With a vision of “Development of a cluster of villages that
preserve and nurture the essence of rural community life with focus on
equity and inclusiveness without compromising with the facilities
perceived to be essentially urban in nature, thus creating a cluster of “Rurban villages”, the National Rurban Mission (NRUM) aims at upgrading the lives of the people living in suburban areas.
NRUM aims at strengthening rural areas and de-burdening the urban areas through balanced regional development. The State Governments would identify the clusters (rural areas) which have latent potential for growth with a population varying between 25,000 to 50,000 and propose the same to the NRUM.
In Coimbatore, Madukkarai has been selected under the National Rurban Mission. A budget of Rs. 30 crores has been announced for the developmental process in Madukkarai and the adjoining nine villages. In this regard, a meeting was convened at the District Collectorate with the officials of various departments to identify the works that needs to be carried out to develop Madukkarai and the adjoining nine villages, as per the norms of NRUM.

A special committee has been formed for the implementation of this scheme and to decide upon a comprehensive action plan. The committee will be headed by the District Collector followed by a Project Director and Officials from various other departments will act as members of this committee.
Digital Literacy, Service Centers for electronic delivery of citizen centric services/e-gram connectivity, Inter-village road connectivity (n) LPG gas connections, Solid and liquid waste management are some of the areas the NRUM focuses and implements at the proposed 'Rurban'.
