As the monsoons have miserably failed this season, all the water bodies in and around our city continue to remain dry. And, the dams around the district of Coimbatore show scarce water remains, indicating a serious water crisis, this summer.
This alarming situation has left the officials to re-plan the water disbursement schedules at all 100 wards in the city. A meeting in this regard was chaired by
CCMC, Commissioner, Dr Vijayakarthikeyan chaired a meeting with the concerned officials to discuss on the cautionary measures to be taken in manage the upcoming acute water scarcity and to ascertain the present levels of water at all water bodies.
Addressing the press, he said “A meeting with respective officials was been hosted to discuss the problem of drinking water supply that all the 100 wards of our Coimbatore Corporation are currently experiencing. TWAD board officials and Coimbatore Corporation officials, sat across the table, to ascertain the ground reality of drinking water supply in our city.”
Considering the present situation, it has been decided to disburse drinking water to all the 100 wards of the CCMC, once in 12 days. In order to make up for the scarcity of drinking water supply, additional vehicles (lorries) will be used to transport drinking water to the respective wards.
The pipelines from the Pilloor Dam have been interlinked with the primary pipeline which brings water from the Siruvani Dam, to manage the situation. Until the situation gets eased off, those areas that were supplied with Siruvani water will be supplied with Pilloor water.
He also added that “Understanding the situation, people should also act responsibly by using water economically. By doing so, the water disbursement can be stretched for few more days to all wards at the onset of summer. Instructions have been given to the concerned officials to equally distribute water across all the five zones in our city. Engineers have been directed to attend to any repair/damages in the drinking water pipelines, as and when reported. The special team that has been formed to ensure smooth supply of water as per schedule at all 100 wards will meet once in a week to discuss and review on the action plan. Every Monday, the team will report the situation to the District Collector'.
