India holds the title of largest producer and exporter of Turmeric globally. The nation consumes 80% of turmeric production and remaining 20% is exported to U.A.E., Japan, Iran, Malaysia, U.S.A and U.K. Amongst other states, Tamil Nadu is one of the leading producer of Turmeric, the crop is cultivated in the districts of Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Namakkal.
Turmeric, the standing crop in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are reported to be damaged due to the long dry spell. According to trade sources, the carryover stocks of Turmeric from 2016 are expected to be around 7 lakh bags (one bag equals 75 kg).
Currently, the arrivals have started coming from Anthiyur, Bhavani, Sathyamangalam and Mysore. According to trade source, the carryover stocks of Turmeric from Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are expected to be around 50 lakh bags (one bag equals 75 kg), which will help to meet out the shortage.
The Price Forecasting Scheme of Centre for Agricultural and Rural
Development Studies (CARDS), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has analyzed
the last 20 years of Turmeric prices prevailed at the Erode Regulated market. According to the results of analysis, farm gate price of good quality turmeric will range from Rs.8,200 to Rs. 8,500 / quintal during harvest (February– March, 2017).
Hence, farmers are advised to take selling decision accordingly.
