Massive fire breaks out at Vellalore dump yard in Coimbatore

Firefighters are engaged in extinguishing the fire that broke out at the Vellalore dump yard with the aid of four vehicles.

Coimbatore: At the garbage dump yard owned by the Corporation in the Vellalore area of Coimbatore, all the garbage collected in the city is dumped and grading work is done. Following the NGT's order, the work of expeditious solid waste management of garbage is also underway.

On Thursday, a fire broke out in the southern part of the garbage dump following which firefighters were pressed into service to douse the fire with a fire engine.

But since the fire kept spreading in the half acre land, the fire could not be brought under control with just one fire engine.

Four fire tenders were then rushed from Coimbatore South, Kinathukadavu and Kovaipudur to douse the raging fire.

The entire area around the Vellalore dump yard is covered with smoke due to the fire.

At present, one acre of garbage is being disposed of by the bogline and fire fighting work is in progress.
