Nilgiris Forest Dept. rescue mother elephant and calf from trench in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve

The mother elephant and her calf along with two other elephants are reported to have slipped and fallen into a trench in the Bospara area of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Nilgiris district. Forest officials rescued the elephants safely by making a way for them to climb out of the trench safely, while lifting the calf out of it.

The Nilgiris: The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris district covers an area of 688 sq. km. With the onset of the summer season in the Reserve which leads to dry and drought conditions, wild elephants have begun migrating with their cubs.

Four elephants along with a cub were on their way to the Bospara area under the Mudumalai forest range on Monday morning when they slipped into a trench that had been set up earlier by the Forest Department in the same area.

Since the elephant calf could not climb out of the high trench, the mother elephant along with the other elephants struggled to rescue the calf. The herd of elephants began to trumpet loudly thereafter.

Hearing the loud cries, the Forest Department officials reached the spot and immediately made way for the elephant calf to climb out of the trench and lifted it to safety. Thereafter, the baby elephant and the mother elephant were driven away into the forest cover.
