Two Arrested for Impregnating Minor Girl Near Dharapuram, Including Elderly Man

A 17-year-old girl was impregnated by a 65-year-old man, Rajendran. He and nurse Usharani, who performed an illegal abortion, were arrested. Charges include POCSO and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act violations.

Tiruppur: In a disturbing case from Tirupur district, police have arrested two individuals, including a 65-year-old man, for impregnating a 17-year-old girl from Ponniyavadi village near Dharapuram. The elderly man, identified as Rajendran from Erakampatti village near Mulanur, employed the girl in his garden for over two years.

Over the past five months, Rajendran repeatedly sexually assaulted the minor, resulting in her pregnancy. The girl’s mother, noticing physical changes in her daughter, inquired about her condition, leading to the revelation of the sexual assaults and subsequent pregnancy.

When the girl’s mother confronted Rajendran, he threatened to kill both her and the girl unless the pregnancy was terminated. Following this, Usharani, a nurse at the Dharapuram Government Hospital, was approached to perform an abortion. She reportedly visited Rajendran’s house and administered abortion pills to the girl, resulting in a miscarriage on December 14.

This incident came to light through a local resident of the village, who informed a member of the Child Welfare Committee, Tharanik. Based on the complaint, the Dharapuram Women’s Police arrested Rajendran and Usharani for their involvement in the crime.

Police officials stated, “Rajendran planned the abortion post the girl’s pregnancy. He approached Usharani, who works as a nurse, and she agreed to perform the abortion in exchange for a large sum of money. She visited Rajendran’s house, conducted a check-up on the girl, and provided the abortion pills.”

Both individuals have been charged under the POCSO Act for their crimes. Additionally, as the girl belongs to a marginalized community, cases have also been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for caste-based threats and intimidation. The accused have been presented in court and are currently detained in Coimbatore jail by the Dharapuram Women’s Police.
