Make frequent visits to vulnerable polling booths: Collector

District Election Officer and Collector Archana Patnaik on Thursday held a meeting with senior police officials to discuss security arrangements at vulnerable polling booths. A release from the district administration said that in the meeting that saw the participation of Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, A. Amalraj, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural, Ramya Bharathi, and other officials, the Collector asked the officials to make frequent visits to such polling booths.

She also discussed the arrangements to be made at the booths and suggested that additional security personnel be posted in the booths.

243 Cases

Officials in flying squads and static surveillance teams in the 10 Assembly constituencies in the district had thus far registered 243 poll-related cases. Officials in the Coimbatore South Assembly constituency had registered the maximum cases, 52, a release from the administration said and added that the officials in the Mettupalayam Assembly constituency came a close second with 51 cases. The officials had also seized Rs. 33.16 lakh and of it returned Rs. 18.80 lakh.

In the Nilgiris district, Collector and District Election Officer P. Shankar pasted voter awareness stickers on tourist and government vehicles, school buses and vans, autorickshaws and other vehicles to encourage people to vote on May 16. On Thursday, he pasted stickers in Nelliyalam in Gudalur Assembly constituency.

A release from the administration said that it was also taking around a vehicle mounted with display screens and beamers that would screen videos of officials, actors and sportsmen urging people to vote. It also reached out to students to ask their parents to vote. Plus, it had also conducted programmes like kolam competition related to elections.

The administration had pasted stickers on LPG cylinders as well, the release added.
