Coimbatore, February 24 - The waste management system under the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has come under scrutiny following allegations by the Contractors Welfare Association. The association's secretary, representing KCP Infra Limited's administrative director Chandra Prakash, released a statement criticizing the current state of waste management in the city.
According to the statement, 25 contractors associated with the Coimbatore Contractors Welfare Association had been efficiently handling waste collection and management until six months ago, when the contract was entirely awarded to an out-of-state company, Southern Company. This shift to a single private company has led to a series of complaints regarding the quality of waste management services.
The association alleges that since the Southern Company took over, there has been a significant decline in the efficiency of waste collection. There are claims that to show increased waste collection, the company is adding soil and debris to the garbage collected, leading to a reported increase of 500 tons more than the quantity collected in the past by the 25 contractors.
The statement points out that when local contractors managed waste collection, most areas in Coimbatore were clean and free of garbage. However, the situation has worsened, with increased garbage accumulation in many areas. The Municipal Corporation has not questioned the company's failure to maintain standards.
The association suggests that if the waste management contract had been distributed among four contractors, it would have ensured continuity of service even if one failed to perform satisfactorily. They also recommend providing training to contractors on waste management to improve efficiency.
