Separated Baby Elephant Safely Reaches Mudumalai Elephant Camp

A three-month-old baby elephant separated from its mother was brought to Mudumalai Elephant Camp for care today, after failed attempts to reunite them in Coimbatore's Maruthamalai forest area.

Coimbatore: A distressed baby elephant, separated from its mother, has safely reached the Mudumalai Elephant Camp early this morning. Forestry officials reported that the three-month-old calf had been under observation and care after its mother, who was approximately 40 years old and in poor health, was found in the Maruthamalai forest region of Coimbatore with the calf on May 30. After treatment of five days, the mother was released back into the forest but the calf lost contact with her.

The baby elephant wandered alone into a private estate from its herd. Forest Department officials promptly intervened and relocated the calf to the Kuppepalayam section of the Attukal forest area where the mother was last released. Despite multiple attempts, the elephant calf was unable to reintegrate with its mother, prompting wildlife experts to transfer it to the Mudumalai camp, accustoming it for further recuperation.

According to the veterinary team at Mudumalai, the calf is now energetic and moving actively around the camp.
