Lawyers in Coimbatore Hunger Strike Against New Criminal Laws

Lawyers in Coimbatore protest against newly implemented criminal laws, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Saksi Adhiniyam, claiming they undermine human rights.

Coimbatore: Today, July 1, marks the nationwide implementation of three new criminal laws—Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Saksi Adhiniyam. These laws have faced strong opposition from the legal community in Coimbatore, who have initiated a hunger strike outside the Coimbatore Courthouse.

Lawyers contend that specific provisions such as the preemptive use of restraints on accused individuals, even before guilt is established, are a direct violation of human rights. Further, the naming of these laws in Sanskrit is seen by them as a move that undermines the linguistic diversity of a multilingual nation.

The protesting lawyers argue that transitioning ongoing cases under previous legal provisions to the new system poses severe challenges and delays, thereby further complicating the justice delivery process. They stress that these new regulations are a complete backlash against human rights and demand their immediate repeal for safeguarding fundamental rights.
