Powerloom Federation Urges Tamil Nadu Government to Issue Orders for Pongal 2025 Free Dhoti and Sari Production

The Tamil Nadu Federation of Powerlooms Associations has requested the state government to release orders for manufacturing free dhotis and saris for Pongal 2025 distribution. The federation emphasizes the urgency, citing recent production challenges and the need for timely order issuance.

Coimbatore: The Tamil Nadu Federation of Powerlooms Associations has appealed to the State government to issue orders for the production of free dhotis and saris for distribution during the Pongal festival in 2025. This request was made through an email sent to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

The Federation highlighted that the Department of Handlooms and Textiles had previously released orders for producing free dhotis, saris, and school uniforms to 238 powerloom cooperative weavers societies, involving 67,000 looms across the State. However, recent challenges have impacted production. Fluctuations in yarn prices over the past three months and the low-price sale of cotton materials and rayon fabrics have forced weavers to halt production.

Weavers in Erode, Tiruchengode, Tirupur, and Coimbatore heavily rely on the annual production of dhotis and saris. The Federation pointed out that for the past decade, production orders were typically issued in June, allowing ample time for manufacturing.

In their appeal, the Federation urged the Chief Minister to issue a government order for the production of 1.68 crore dhotis and 1.73 crore saris in the State. They emphasized the importance of timely action, stating, "If production begins immediately, dhotis and saris will be ready by the end of December 2024 for distribution."

The Federation's request underscores the significance of these orders for the powerloom sector and the livelihoods of thousands of weavers across Tamil Nadu. Timely issuance of production orders would not only ensure the availability of free dhotis and saris for Pongal 2025 but also provide much-needed economic stability to the weaving community.
