Youth Engage in Risky Fishing Activities Amid Noyyal River Flood in Coimbatore

Heavy rains in Western Ghats cause flooding in Noyyal River. Despite dangers, some youth engage in fishing activities, raising safety concerns. Calls for police patrolling and warning signs increase.

Coimbatore: The Noyyal River is experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rains in the Western Ghats, but some youths are disregarding the danger and entering the river to fish, raising serious safety concerns.

Continuous heavy rains have been lashing the Western Ghats and foothills since the night before last, causing increased water flow in the mountain streams. As a result, the Noyyal River has swollen significantly, with floodwaters surging through key points such as the Chithirai Chavadi dam, the first check dam on the Noyyal, and the Coimbatore Athupalayam limestone canal dam and its adjoining areas. The river is currently discharging water at a rate of 400 cubic feet per second.

Despite the obvious risks, some young people have been spotted entering the overflowing river to take selfies, swim, and fish. This reckless behavior has prompted calls for increased police patrolling to prevent potential accidents. There are also demands for the installation of warning signs at such dangerous locations to deter people from engaging in these hazardous activities.

The situation highlights the need for greater public awareness about the dangers of entering swollen rivers during flood conditions. Local authorities are urged to take immediate action to ensure the safety of residents and prevent any untoward incidents along the Noyyal River's banks.
