Ooty-Coonoor Mountain Railway Service Temporarily Suspended in Nilgiris

Heavy rains and strong winds in Nilgiris cause tree falls on railway tracks, leading to temporary suspension of Ooty-Coonoor mountain train service from July 22.

Coimbatore: The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) service between Ooty and Coonoor has been temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions in the Nilgiri district. The Railway administration announced the suspension of services starting July 22, following a week of heavy rains and strong winds in the region.

The areas of Ooty, Coonoor, Kotagiri, and Kunda have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds for the past week. This has resulted in numerous instances of tree falls and landslides across the region.

On the Ooty-Coonoor mountain railway track, trees have fallen at more than ten locations due to the cyclonic winds. The railway administration stated that the mountain train service between Coonoor and Ooty has been temporarily cancelled as a precautionary measure.

Railway staff are currently engaged in clearing the fallen trees from the tracks. The railway administration has assured that the train service will resume as soon as the clearing operations are completed and the tracks are deemed safe for travel.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a popular tourist attraction in the region. The temporary suspension of the service is expected to affect tourist activities in the area until normal operations can be restored.
