Illegal Liquor Sale at Double Prices During Holiday in Udumalaipettai

During the Milad Nabi holiday in Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur district, illegal sale of government liquor at double prices caused traffic congestion near the central bus stand as crowds gathered to purchase alcohol.

Coimbatore: The Milad Nabi public holiday in Udumalaipettai, Tiruppur district, led to an unexpected situation as government-run TASMAC liquor shops were closed. Taking advantage of this closure, illegal sale of government liquor at double the regular price took place near the central bus stand, specifically at the bar in shop number 2009.

The closure of official liquor outlets prompted alcohol enthusiasts to seek alternatives, resulting in a festival-like gathering at the illegal sale point. The central location of the activity, combined with the large number of people congregating in one place, caused significant traffic congestion in the area.

Local residents and shopkeepers expressed their frustration, stating that even on regular days when the government liquor shop is open, such crowding is not witnessed. They complained that the illegal sale of alcohol is causing increased troubles for the public. Despite informing the police about the illicit liquor trade, locals claim that no action was taken to address the situation.

The incident highlights the need for stricter enforcement of regulations during public holidays and raises concerns about the effectiveness of existing measures to prevent illegal alcohol sales. It also underscores the potential public safety issues that can arise from uncontrolled crowds gathering in central areas of the town.
