Smuggled Cigarettes Worth Rs 1.4 Lakh Seized from Abu Dhabi Flight at Coimbatore Airport

Air Intelligence Unit officials seized smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 1.4 lakh from a passenger arriving from Abu Dhabi at Coimbatore International Airport on Tuesday morning.


Coimbatore: Air Intelligence Unit officials at the Coimbatore International Airport seized smuggled cigarettes worth Rs 1.4 lakh from a passenger who arrived on a flight from Abu Dhabi on Tuesday morning.

The Coimbatore-Abu Dhabi route operates thrice a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. On Tuesday, as the flight from Abu Dhabi landed at around 6:30 AM, Air Intelligence Unit officials conducted routine checks on arriving passengers.

During the inspection, officials found suspicious packages in the possession of one passenger. Upon closer examination, they discovered foreign-brand cigarettes labeled 'SC' concealed behind food product stickers. The officials seized a total of 14,000 cigarettes valued at approximately Rs 1.4 lakh.

The Air Intelligence Unit has registered a case against the passenger and is conducting further investigations into the smuggling attempt. This incident highlights the ongoing vigilance of customs officials at Coimbatore International Airport in preventing the illegal import of restricted goods.
