Leopard attacks calf in Puliyankandi near Pollachi, causes panic

A leopard entered a private farm near Puliyankandi, Pollachi, and attacked a calf, causing panic among residents. Forest officials are monitoring the situation after the incident occurred around 8 PM.

Coimbatore: Residents of Puliyankandi, near Pollachi, were thrown into a state of panic when a leopard entered a private farm and attacked a calf on Wednesday night. The incident has raised concerns about the increasing human-wildlife conflict in the area.

The farm, located at the foothills of the Western Ghats within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, belongs to a woman named Subhashini. Around 8 PM, farm workers heard dogs barking incessantly and went to investigate. To their shock, they found a leopard attempting to prey on a calf.

The workers managed to chase away the leopard, preventing further harm to the livestock.

They immediately alerted the Forest Department about the incident. Forest officials promptly arrived at the scene and have since been monitoring the area closely.

Fortunately, both the calf and a dog on the farm escaped with minor injuries. A veterinarian is currently treating the injured animals. The incident has left the local community shaken, with residents demanding that the Forest Department take immediate action to capture the leopard using traps.

This event highlights the ongoing challenges faced by communities living on the fringes of forest areas, where wild animals occasionally venture into human settlements. The Forest Department faces the delicate task of balancing wildlife conservation with the safety concerns of local residents.

As the monitoring continues, authorities are expected to implement measures to prevent future incursions and ensure the safety of both humans and wildlife in the region.
