District Collector Orders Closure of All Liquor Shops in Coimbatore on May Day

Coimbatore District Collector Pavan Kumar Giriyappanavar has ordered the closure of all liquor outlets across the district on May 1st, observing May Day as a dry day. The order covers government shops, bars, clubs, hotels, and imported liquor stores, with strict action warned against violators.

Coimbatore: District Collector Pavan Kumar Giriyappanavar has issued orders to close all liquor shops in Coimbatore on May Day, declaring it a dry day across the district.

In a statement released yesterday, the Collector announced that since May 1st is celebrated as Workers' Day, the date has been declared as a prohibition day, and all government liquor shops in the district have been ordered to remain closed.

Additionally, the closure order extends to bars, liquor outlets operating in entertainment and recreational clubs, liquor shops functioning in star hotels, liquor outlets run by Tamil Nadu Hotels and Tourism Department, and shops selling imported foreign liquor. All such establishments will remain shut on that day.

The Collector has warned that action will be taken under the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act 1937 against those who sell liquor in violation of the rules on that day, as well as against those who illegally stock liquor or transport it from one place to another.

This annual observance ensures that May Day is marked with sobriety, honoring the significance of the Workers' Day across the district. The district administration has made it clear that strict enforcement measures will be in place to ensure compliance with the dry day notification.
