Following a hung Assembly in Tamil Nadu with no party crossing majority, MK Stalin has resigned as Chief Minister, submitting his resignation to the Governor after DMK’s electoral setback.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has resigned from his post following the Assembly election results that resulted in a hung House, with no party securing a clear majority.
According to official sources, Stalin submitted his resignation to Governor RN Ravi via email after the DMK-led alliance suffered a significant setback in the polls.
In the election results, the DMK alliance secured 73 seats, while the AIADMK alliance won 53 seats. The majority mark in the 234-member Assembly stands at 118, leaving both alliances short of forming a government.
The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, contested extensively and emerged as a major force, winning 108 seats. Despite becoming the single largest party, TVK too fell short of the majority required to form the government, resulting in a hung Assembly.
The results also marked a major setback for the DMK leadership, with several key ministers facing defeat. Out of 33 prominent candidates including ministers and the Speaker, 16—including 15 ministers and the Speaker—lost their seats.
In a significant development, MK Stalin himself was defeated in his Kolathur constituency by TVK candidate VS Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes. Only 17 ministers from the outgoing government managed to retain their seats amid stiff competition.
Political observers note that the rise of TVK played a decisive role in reshaping the electoral landscape, with the party securing a vote share of 34.92 percent, higher than the AIADMK’s debut performance in 1977.
Following the results, TVK leader Vijay has staked claim to form the government and has reportedly written to the Governor seeking an opportunity, along with 15 days’ time to prove majority support.
