A public interest petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the sexual assault and murder of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district. The petitioner has demanded independent investigation citing police lapses in the case.

Coimbatore: A public interest litigation has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the sexual assault and murder case of a 10-year-old girl near Sulur in Coimbatore district.

The petition, filed by Chokkalingam at the Madras High Court, states that the 10-year-old girl from Sulur in Coimbatore district was abducted, sexually assaulted and subsequently murdered. The petition mentions that police have arrested two persons, Karthik and Mohan Raj, in connection with the incident.

According to the petition, the victim's mother, in an interview, stated that she approached the police immediately after her child went missing. At that time, she was assured that "the girl is safe and under police surveillance." However, the subsequent recovery of the girl's body after she was murdered caused immense shock, the petition stated.

Therefore, citing the need for an independent and transparent investigation in this case, the petitioner has demanded that a Special Investigation Team comprising police officers be constituted to conduct the probe.

Additionally, the petition has emphasized that a special investigation mechanism should be set up in this case, similar to those established in the Anna University student and Chennai Anna Nagar minor girl sexual assault cases.

Furthermore, the petition has requested that all forms of media be restrained from publishing news related to the case, as videos and information circulating on social media platforms could hamper the investigation.

The PIL is expected to come up for hearing soon.
