The Coimbatore city police have arrested two youths from Tirunelveli in connection with an attempted robbery involving gold jewellery worth nearly ₹1 crore near the Coimbatore Railway Station.
According to police, Murugesan (55), an employee of a jewellery manufacturing unit in Selvapuram, regularly transports gold ornaments between Coimbatore and Chennai. The ornaments are supplied to jewellery stores in Chennai, and payments are collected before returning to Coimbatore.
On the day of the incident, Murugesan returned from Chennai on the Cheran Express carrying gold jewellery. After alighting at Coimbatore Railway Station, he proceeded towards a waiting car near Goods Shed Road with a bag containing the ornaments.
As he approached the vehicle, three men on a motorcycle allegedly intercepted him and attempted to snatch the bag. However, Murugesan held on to the bag and quickly got into the waiting car. The driver immediately drove away, foiling the robbery attempt.
The bag reportedly contained gold jewellery worth around ₹1 crore. Following a complaint from jewellery traders, the Ukkadam Police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Police examined CCTV footage from the area and identified the suspects. Based on the evidence, officers arrested Isakki Pandi (23) and Ayyappan (22), both natives of Tirunelveli district. Further investigation is underway to trace the remaining suspect and determine whether the accused were part of a larger robbery network.
