Pump Prices Likely to Rise Amid Cost Surge; Industry Urges Centre for GST Reduction

Leading pump manufacturing associations IPMA, SIEMA and REA have warned that rising raw material and production costs are making pump price revisions unavoidable. The industry has also urged the Centre to reduce GST on pumps from 18 per cent to 5 per cent, saying the move would benefit farmers, boost energy efficiency and strengthen domestic manufacturing.

Coimbatore: Retail petroleum product prices are poised for a significant upward revision as manufacturers grapple with escalating input costs across the supply chain. Industry associations have formally approached the central government requesting immediate intervention through reduction in Goods and Services Tax rates to provide relief to end consumers.

The petroleum sector has been experiencing sustained pressure from rising crude oil prices in international markets, coupled with increased operational expenses and supply chain disruptions. Manufacturing units have absorbed these cost increases for several months but are now finding it unsustainable to maintain current retail price levels without passing on the burden to consumers.

Industry representatives have highlighted that the current GST structure on petroleum products adds substantially to the final retail price, making India one of the countries with highest fuel taxation globally. They have proposed a temporary reduction in GST rates as a relief measure that would directly benefit millions of consumers and businesses dependent on petroleum products for their daily operations.

The potential price increase is expected to have cascading effects across multiple sectors of the economy. Transportation costs, manufacturing expenses, and agricultural operations all depend heavily on petroleum products. Any significant price hike would likely translate into increased costs for essential commodities and services, potentially fueling inflationary pressures across the economy.

Economic analysts have expressed concern that a sharp increase in fuel prices could dampen consumer spending and impact overall economic growth momentum. The timing of the price revision is particularly sensitive given the current economic climate and ongoing efforts to maintain price stability across essential goods and services.

Government officials have acknowledged receiving representations from industry bodies and have indicated that the matter is under active consideration. However, no official statement has been issued regarding potential GST rate adjustments or any alternative measures to mitigate the impact of rising petroleum prices on consumers.

The petroleum industry has emphasized the need for a balanced approach that ensures sustainability of manufacturing operations while protecting consumer interests. Industry leaders have suggested that a phased price adjustment combined with tax relief could provide a more manageable transition for all stakeholders in the petroleum value chain.
