Surya Prasad, State Youth Secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi, was arrested and lodged in prison after a Coimbatore court dismissed his appeal against his conviction in an attempt to murder case.
Surya Prasad (29), popularly known as Surya, is a resident of Muthusamy Colony in Selvapuram. He previously served as the Selvapuram City President of Hindu Munnani and is currently the State Youth Secretary of Hindu Makkal Katchi.
According to police, the case relates to an incident on May 27, 2021, in which Surya allegedly stabbed a man identified as Faisal during an altercation over picking up a passenger at the auto stand near the Coimbatore Railway Station. Based on the complaint, the C2 Race Course Police registered a case against him under charges including attempt to murder and criminal intimidation.
After the trial, the Coimbatore I Additional District and Sessions Court, on December 12, 2025, found Surya guilty and sentenced him to two years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 under the attempt to murder charge. He was also awarded six months' imprisonment and fined ₹1,000 under the criminal intimidation charge.
Surya challenged the conviction before the Principal District and Sessions Court, Coimbatore. However, the appellate court dismissed his appeal, following which the I Additional District and Sessions Court issued a non-bailable warrant against him.
Acting on the warrant, the C2 Race Course Police traced and arrested Surya, who was reportedly absconding, on Monday (June 22). He was subsequently produced before the court and remanded to judicial custody.
