Ganja and other narcotic substances seized in 1,036 cases across Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem and other districts in Tamil Nadu’s Western Zone were destroyed following the completion of legal procedures at a private facility in Chettipalayam, Coimbatore, on Tuesday. The seized contraband included 2,112.775 kg of ganja, along with other narcotic substances.
Coimbatore: A total of 2,112.775 kg of ganja seized in 1,036 cases across police units in Tamil Nadu’s Western Zone was destroyed following the completion of prescribed legal procedures at a private facility in Chettipalayam, Coimbatore district, on Tuesday.
The destruction formed part of the Tamil Nadu government’s “DRUG FREE TAMIL NADU” initiative, according to a detailed press release issued by the police. As part of the State-level campaign, an Anti-Drug Pledge was also administered on Tuesday under the leadership of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Police personnel across the Western Zone took the pledge, reaffirming their commitment to preventing the use, possession, sale and trafficking of narcotic substances.
The seized ganja was recovered in cases registered across three city police commissionerates and several police districts in the Western Zone. Coimbatore City accounted for 267.649 kg seized in 144 cases, while Salem City recorded 44.620 kg in 24 cases and Tiruppur City 378.479 kg in 66 cases. In the districts, 112.339 kg was seized in 93 cases in Coimbatore District and 679.157 kg in 238 cases in Erode District.
Further seizures included 49 kg from The Nilgiris, 152.700 kg from Salem District, 115 kg from Namakkal, 138.800 kg from Dharmapuri, 50.131 kg from Krishnagiri and 124.900 kg by the Tiruppur Railway Police. Altogether, the seizures accounted for 2,112.775 kg of ganja across 1,036 cases.
Besides ganja, other narcotic substances and related materials seized in various cases were also authorised for destruction. These included 103 grams of methamphetamine, 4,268 tablets, 1,200 ampoules and 30 syringes.
The destruction proceedings were conducted in the presence of senior police officials, including Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Dr. N. Kannan, West Zone Inspector General of Police R.V. Ramya Bharathi, Salem City Police Commissioner K. Joshi Nirmal Kumar and Tiruppur City Police Commissioner S. Rajeswari. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, Dr. P. Saminathan, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Salem Range, Santhosh Hadimani, and other senior police officers also participated in the proceedings.
The police said intensive surveillance and stringent legal action against the sale, possession and trafficking of narcotic substances would continue across the Western Zone, with particular emphasis on preventing drug abuse among students and youth.
The Coimbatore District Police also appealed to members of the public to share information with the police regarding the sale, trafficking, storage or illegal use of narcotic substances, stressing that public participation was essential to protecting the younger generation and achieving the goal of a drug-free Tamil Nadu.
