Corporation plans to improve Siruvani water supply

Coimbatore Corporation has asked the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board for improved Siruvani supply.

According to sources, the civic body engineers are in talks with the Board engineers to see if there could be an increase in the quantity of water drawn from the Siruvani Reservoir so as to improve supply to Siruvani-fed areas.

In the past few days the Board had been supplying around 53 million litres a day(mld) to the Coimbatore Corporation, which distributed it to residents of 26 wards in full and a few others in part. To augment the supply, the Corporation had asked the Board to supply over 60 mld.

The sources said that the request for increased supply could be met but then the quantity of water in reservoir would deplete faster. If the Board were to supply around 53 mld, it would be able to stretch the supply till the end of May, just in time for the arrival of the South West Monsoon. If it increased the quantity, the water would be enough only to meet the city’s drinking water needs till May 15 or so, the sources said.

Officials in the Board said that they were considering the Corporation’s request for augmenting the supply and would soon increase the quantity.
