Bharthiyar university soon to get new V-C

After Thiruvalluvar and Tamil Nadu Teachers' Education Universities, it is the turn of Bharathiar University to get its new vice-chancellor. The search committee met on Wednesday at the university to shortlist the names which will soon be submitted to the Governor K Rosiah.

The three-member search committee headed by Anna University vice-chancellor M Rajaram met on the Bharathiar University campus to scrutinize the applications. A highly placed source confirmed the development, and said, ""The names have been shortlisted, and the final three names will be sent to the governor soon."" While according to at least three university officials, the search committee has finalized the three names, the members of the committee when contacted, did not wish to comment.

A university official said, ""They have almost finalized on the three names. I have been informed that the file may reach the governor's office this weekend or next week.""

According to sources, some of the names that featured as strong contenders for the post include a computer science professor of Madurai Kamaraj University, a professor of Anna University and a professor of Bharathiar University. ""The computer science professor of MKU is likely to bag the position. We have heard that he is close to senior leaders of the ruling party,"" said a source. The Anna University professor who is also believed to be close with the state government, has been offered another university in a southern district.

This is the third state university which will be getting a new vice-chancellor despite a pending case against the appointments of V-Cs in the Madras high court. The V-C post in Bharathiar University has been vacant since September 21, 2015. When asked by when the decision on the appointment of the new V-C would be taken, a source aware of the development, said, ""There is no deadline, it should happen soon."" The search committee was constituted in October.
