Training for the disabled

Cheshire Homes, Coimbatore, a non-profit organisation, has established a Hi-Tech Training Centre here for persons with disability.

According to P. Raviselvan, chairman of Cheshire Homes, Round Table 62 and Ladies Circle 23, who are the main sponsors for the centre, have contributed Rs. 7 lakh.

The centre caters to people with all kind of disability and it has been established to train the mentally disabled and visually challenged.

It has been set up at the Livelihood Resource Centre, Avarampalayam.

“The absence of such a facility for people with disability in Coimbatore and nearby districts prompted us to open this training centre. It offers basic to advanced level training free of cost,” he says.

The duration of each course is two months. But it also depends on the efficiency of the candidate. The course also ensures placement in different sectors.

The main sectors that the centre offers training in are: textiles, hospitality, and engineering.

Currently, the centre has one batch with 50 candidates. It is open to those aged between 10 years and 15 years for children skill development, 18 years and 45 years for wage employment training preparatory activities, and those aged above 45 for self-employment programmes.
