Road to be widened in four months

State Highways department expects to complete the road widening works taken up recently at Coimbatore, Pollachi and Udumalpet (on NH 209) in another four months.

According to an official of the department, the project has been taken up by the National Highways wing of the State Highways department under the road safety segment.

The works started three months ago to widen the road into a four lane one at a total cost of Rs. 22 crore. It includes works at Pollachi (Rs. 6 crore), Udumalpet (Rs. 6 crore), and Coimbatore (Rs. 10 crore).

In Coimbatore the road will be widened from Eachanari to Sundarapuram and in Pollachi it will be from Aatchipatti to CTC medu. At Udumalpet, the road will be widened from electric crematorium to Kozhumam.

Regarding taking up works under the road safety section, K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said works are usually taken up on smaller stretches under the Central road safety fund to avoid accidents in that location.

Another project, at an estimated cost of Rs. 500 crore, is to widen the Pollachi road into a four-lane one for 25-km from bypass road junction to Aatchipatti. This is in the final stages for commencement of works and has not taken off because of Assembly elections in the State next month. The project will include bridges at Othakalmandapam and Kinathukadavu.

Both the projects do not have land acquisition. Driving down to Udumalpet from Coimbatore takes up to 2 hours and widening of the road is expected to ease traffic congestions and reduce the travelling time.
