Hubby, mother-in-law arrested for abetting woman to kill herself

A 29-year-old man was on Saturday arrested for abetting the suicide of his 20-year-old wife at Weavers Colony in Kovilmedu here. His mother was also arrested for her involvement in the crime. Investigating officials said the woman took the extreme step fed up with the torture from her husband and mother-in-law.

The arrested have been identified as R Raja, 29, a carpenter, and his mother R Mathi alias Gandhimathi, 50, both hailing from Kovilmedu. They were held for abetting the suicide of R Nathiya, a native of Madhagupatti in Sivaganga district.

Raja, police said, married Nathiya about 13 months back. While the couple stayed in the first floor of the house, Gandhimathi lived in the ground floor. Nathiya's father G Rasappan, 48, a carpenter, had given Raja nine sovereigns of gold jewellery as dowry. Raja, a drunkard, often used to pick up quarrel with Nathiya.

On Friday night, Rasappan invited the pair to attend a temple festival in Madhagupatti. But Raja rejected the invite, saying he was busy with work. He also didn't allow Nathiya to join her family for the temple fest. The couple picked up a quarrel at around 10.30pm that day and in the heat of the moment, Raja beat his wife and went to the ground floor of the house, where his mother lives.

Nathiya locked the front door of their house from inside and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of the house. When Raja returned, he broke open the house when Nathiya didn't respond to him and found her hanging, using a saree. Immediately, he took her to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared her brought dead.

Rasappan has lodged a complaint with the Thudiyalur all-woman police, who have registered a case against Raja and Gandhimathi under Section 498 (A) (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her cruelty) and 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC. Police have arrested the duo and remanded them to judicial custody.
