'Municipality neither clean tanks nor check them for defects'

Water from the company's treatment plant is stored in the tank after which it is sent for RO treatment, said an official. Since the treatment plant was being used round-the-clock, they could not conduct any inspection for defects.

The remaining water was pumped out and the road was cleared within three hours. But activists in Mettupalayam said that the road was often crowded as a temple was located close by. "Luckily, there was no one in the area at that time. But government officials and private companies should take appropriate action and ensure that such incidents are avoided in future. There are several overhead tanks built by the municipality as well. They are neither cleaned nor checked for defect," said an activist.

The officials said that they would conduct a detailed inspection on Monday and ensure that such mishaps are avoided in future.
